One of her friends told her about New Beginning Recovery, where she earned her GED so she could go on to college. She also met with her New Beginning Recovery mentor regularly and took Parenting classes at New Beginning Recovery. Individual and group counseling, support groups, and family therapy for adult and child survivors. Following best practices, New Beginning Recovery does not offer counseling with the abusive individual. Onsite or scattered site housing, rent and/or utility subsidies, housing-specific case management, resource referrals, and employment guidance for six to 24 months.

Alejandra found out that she was pregnant just days before her 17th birthday. An “A” student who had spent her first three years of high school taking IB and college classes, as well as working, Alejandra wasn’t sure what her life would look like as a teen parent. Alejandra hid her pregnancy until she was about six months along, and eventually told her parents and friends. She felt shamed and scared, and she was struggling with preeclampsia and migraines as she got closer to her due date.

They provide staff who are trained in trauma-informed care and harm reduction, housing navigation services, case management, healthy and nutritious meals, and more. Shelters also divert the most vulnerable from relying on the most expensive services like hospital emergency rooms, jails, police, emergency response systems, and the child welfare system. On a daily basis, we are changing people’s lives, restoring families, and providing hope. Since 1996, The Salvation Army’s New Beginning Recovery in Medford has helped Jackson County’s homeless get back on their feet. New Beginning Recovery is a drug and alcohol free transitional living facility that accommodates single men, single women and families. Living facilities include individual rooms and dorms for single men and women.
Brittani
Preble Street assumed operations of New Beginning Recovery on Sunday, February 2, 2025, from Penobscot Community Health Center (PCHC). Transitional housing is temporary housing for the working homeless population and is set up to transition their residents to permanent housing. Percentage of residents who were under the age of 18 staying in our shelter last year. People successfully exiting New Beginning Recovery programs who are stably housed 1 year later. Six months later, Janelle had earned her GED and had found her own confidence. With the support of our College & Career Program, Janelle applied to the Community College of Denver and began working toward a certification in machining.
Unfortunately these are common realities for a young woman growing up in poverty. However, not only did Vanessa grow up in generational poverty, she also grew up in an environment that did not trust the police force and actually hated police officers. Men, women and families come to us from the street, from camps and cars and find a hand up to help them get back on their feet. Through classes at New Beginning Recovery, Fatima learned how to set boundaries and establish healthy relationships.

Eventually, Alejandra got connected to New Beginning Recovery through clinic staff at the office where she went to get ultrasounds. At first, she was nervous about what her family would say, but in January of 2022, Alejandra became a New Beginning Recovery Mom and has loved it ever since. Partnership with the Independence Police Department to provide New Beginning Recovery crisis intervention services, advocacy, and resource referrals and linkages to survivors contacting the police for assistance. The Co-Responding Advocate also coordinates revisits to survivors’ homes with Independence Police officers to offer additional support and resources. High-quality professionally run shelters, like Preble Street New Beginning Recovery, provide more than just a place to sleep for a night.

She also completed our Parenting, Healthy Relationships, and Financial Literacy classes – as well as an internship at Head Start. Brittani was born into poverty and chaos — and her mother struggled with cancer and her father with kidney failure. Dropping out of school in 10th grade, Brittani was pregnant by age 15 . The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. In case you haven’t already heard, this will be my last post as Executive Director.
By the time Joseph was born, Janelle had stopped going to school. Stephanie is no longer the vulnerable, frightened teen mom who applied to New Beginning Recovery. “For the first time in my life, I feel stable and stress free. And I couldn’t have gotten here without New Beginning Recovery to get me started,” says Brittani. Alondra also had to overcome homelessness and generational poverty.
New Beginning Recovery also helped her get a car, a paid internship with Jefferson County and an apartment. Life felt so intensely depressing that Fatima feared she would have a miscarriage. Her living situation with family was chaotic and unsafe all throughout her pregnancy, but at 16—with little support or encouragement—she gave birth to her son Julian. 24-hour crisis hotline support; onsite safe shelter and offsite hotel placement; basic necessities; crisis intervention and support; and life skills groups.

Janelle and her boys eventually became homeless — sleeping in a car, on the ground, or in homeless shelters. Sleeping in a car was actually a good night because the ground was cold and the shelters were crowded, smelly and scary. She was 12 when her parents’ fights and addictions led them to split. Although Janelle and her brothers were already used to living in chaos, now they were left on the sidelines, trying to take care of themselves. Janelle ended up meeting an older boy – and they connected deeply as they shared stories from their rough childhoods.
At the time, Edith was experiencing depression while facing the economic challenges of being a teen mom. After a friend introduced her to New Beginning Recovery, Edith felt the encouragement she needed to move forward with her life and build a healthy future for herself and her son. In a year’s time, she was able to cover her expenses and begin saving for a down payment for a house.
Investing in our community
New Beginning Recovery programs that include Professional Case Management so families receive a hand up not a handout. Since becoming a New Beginning Recovery Mom, Alejandra has been able to finish her GED through Penn Foster in February of 2022 and is incredibly thankful for the support and motivation she had through New Beginning Recovery Staff. She attended the GED graduation in May 2022 and gave the graduation speech. Janely, Alejandra’s 9-month-old-daughter, is also enrolled in the Early Learning Program. Alejandra has also taken other classes including Parenting 101, Relationship Classes, and Self-Care classes. By age 14, Janelle was pregnant, and that same boyfriend became abusive, leaving her with bruises make-up couldn’t cover.
For families, home is one large room when they first come to New Beginning Recovery. Low-barrier shelters do not require background checks, credit checks, or income verification, previous program participation, sobriety, or ID for access to services. Up to 40 women and children are welcomed as guests each night in our clean, safe shelter. More than a roof over their head, our shelter is a place that provides a sense of safety and security and surrounds women with support needed to work on the root problems that led to homelessness.

At the end of June, I will join many of you in the enchanted land of retirement and social security recipient.
